UK100 responds to the Prime Minister's "plan for motorists" announcement which evoked conspiracy theories and included proposals to strip local authorities of their powers to create safer streets.

Christopher Hammond, UK100 Chief Executive, says:

"Rather than a war on the motorist, this is a war on common sense. Nobody wants a free-for-all on our streets, least of all car drivers. Limiting councils' ability to implement tailored local transport solutions risks more congestion, dirtier air and more dangerous streets."

"Local authorities understand their communities best - residents trust them over Whitehall to balance increasing transport options with safer and cleaner communities. Now is the time to empower them, not impose centralised policies that ignore local needs."

“The Conservative government was once proud of its progress on Net Zero and devolution. Seeing Ministers embrace conspiracy theories to justify a central government power grab is a concerning change of direction."
